Food production is done in both the atrium and the external wicking beds. These beds are extremely efficient on water use, using around one tenth of the water used in conventional irrigation.
Example EarthShip Atriums – Plants growing inside the Ship
The atrium climate is conducive to:
- Growing vegetables out of season. Eg, winter tomatoes.
- Growing tropical crops in a temperate zone (bananas & Mangoes in the Adelaide region)
- Including an aquaponics system for growing fish.
